K Mixing and Mastering

QNAP’s 10GbE solution provides higher storage capacity and data protection while greatly simplifying media editing workflows

  • Background

K Mixing and Mastering is a company founded by Kasper Sandberg Larsen in Denmark. He helps record companies and musicians fine-tune the sound quality of their recordings via mixing and mastering and by adding his special touches. After that, their music is perfected for playback on any device in any venue – from smartphones, to speakers, to large stadiums.

  • Challenge

As with many other industries, file sizes have grown in music. A project folder for a single song has grown from 500 MB to more than 3 GB in the last decade. Previously, Kasper Sandberg Larsen stored the data on his computer and then transferred finished projects to external hard drives. If customers subsequently needed to correct a detail in a song, it would require a tedious connection process and then enduring a slow data transfer. Also, the transferring process generates hard disk noise - an unwelcome element in a sound studio. Therefore, Kasper Sandberg Larsen needed a high-capacity and scalable storage solution that can be located away from his Digital Audio Workstation.

Solution

A combination of a QNAP TVS-672XT 10GbE NAS, QSW-M2108-2C 10GbE switch and QNA-T310G1T 10GbE Thunderbolt adapter was the perfect solution. Kasper Sanberg Larsen added 10GbE to his workstation and moved all his work projects and raw files (both ongoing projects and Kasper's large archive) to the NAS located in another room connected via 10GbE switch. With QNAP’s solution, Kasper Sandberg Larsen created a single, smooth work environment with 36 TB of storage space divided into 6 hard drives in RAID 5, which strikes the perfect balance between storage speed and capacity.

Result

For Kasper Sandberg Larsen, this solution has removed many cumbersome everyday problems and processes. Having all the files stored in one place is hugely time saving, for all his files and projects are always available. He also no longer has to waste time on organizing files across multiple media and hard drives. With the 10GbE connection, he can also store his ongoing projects on the NAS and access them in real time without having to worry about loading times or hassle. But most of all, it has given Kasper Sandberg Larsen extra time to think creatively and to focus on helping musicians.
